In class we examined how acctio acid is produce via the following reaction
3C2H5OH+2Na2Cr2O7+8H2SO4
3CH3COOH+2Cr(SO4)3+2Na2SO4+11H2O
Fresh C2H3OH is fed in one inlet stream at a rate of 1000.0hr(1) freh NaCr2O2 and H2SO4 are fed in a second inlet stream (2). A recyele stream (4) meets the two inlet strenms to mix before the reactor. The reaction only occurs in the reactor. After the reactor the stream eniers a separanor from which threestreams oxit one that contains only acetic acid, CH3COOH,(6), one than contains some excess H2SO4 and C2H6OH, which are recycled (4), and one that contains all the other waste products and some excess reactants (7) Note, this waste strean (7) can contain CaH,OH,Na2Cr2O7,H2SO4, and other products, but not CH3COOH
The overnll systems tractional conversion of C2H3OH is 90,0%(this is the comyerion tor streams 1 and 7).
The total recycle (4) mass flow mite is equal to the fresh inlet mass flow rate of C2H,OH(1).
The inflow rate of fresh H3SO4 and Na2Cr2O7(Sicam 2) are in exees of the stoichiometrie amounts required by the fresh flow rate of C2H5OH(Stream 1) by 20.0g and 10.0% respectively.
The recycle stream (4) contuins 940 wi,H2SO4 and the rest is C2H2OH
Assume stendy state for this process.
