A data analyst desires to develop a model to predict how many yards a runner will gain after being given the football. Rushing plays only, passing is out of scope. Statistics have been captured which include:

  • Where every player on the field is located when the play begins
  • What player actually runs with the ball
  • Who each player is, their height, weight, age, football position being played for the play (QB, offensive left tackle, defensive end, etc.) and years of experience in the league
  • Weather conditions at the time of the play (wind, temp, rain, etc.)
  • The score, down, yards to go for first down, and yards to go for a touchdown at the start of the play
