In many applications, 0-1 variables provide selections or choices with the value of the variable equal to 1 if a corresponding activity is undertaken and equal to 0 if the corresponding activity is not undertaken (Anderson et al., 2016). We can set up integer models for complex scenarios or for simple problems we face every day. One example that I have experienced lately is the decision to purchase a home. I toured many houses before finding the right one, and this could be simplified using a linear optimization problem, whereas 1 represents "buy" and 0 represents "do not buy." Constraints to be considered include what neighborhood in which the home is located, the cost of the home, future resale value or rental potential, and the likeability of the home itself. This was my first home purchase, so I realized that I would have to compromise on my wish list. Using a decision tree along with the 0, 1 integer model could help me to narrow down the search for a home while ticking as many boxes as possible on my wish list. What are your toughts?
