In order to draw valid statistical conclusions in regards to the value of population parameters or how they differentiate between each other, the technique of hypothesis testing is required. The processes and steps used in hypothesis testing include drawing inferences about different propositions that are related the value of a population parameter. This is commonly referred to as the mean, proportion, standard deviation or the variance. Their are two different propositions commonly referred to as the null hypothesis and the alternate hypothesis. The null describes a preexisting theory or a belief while the alternative hypothesis is solely based on new information provided with the use of sample data. With the new data collected a determination can be made to whether to reject the null hypothesis which would show that the sample information gives reliable sufficient statistical data that would support the alternative hypothesis. On the other hand it could fail to reject the null and show that the sample data is unsupported to the alternative hypothesis. If the null is not rejected then it would be assumed that the theory in place is true even though it couldn't be proved. When describing parametric vs non parametric testing regarding hypothesis testing parametric testing is the population means the focus or the difference in the means. In non parametric testing the hypothesis testing refers to ranks medians or frequencies.
