In my career I have worn many different hats. I have a various background of customer service, healthcare and mortgage finances. I have dealt with in this time many leaders that have exuded great characteristics and some that have been subpar. One that comes to mind, when thinking of a transformative leader is Justin. Justin is a supervisor that I have for a brief period of time in 2018, while working at Baylor as a medical assistant. Justin's personality type was specifically catered to being a light in the room. I choose him for being a transformative leader because of the way that he was able to transform and produce high performers with his staff. I met Justin after I had been at Baylor family medical center for a year. At first, I was sad to meet him as the reason that he was hired is because I was passed over for the opportunity for the position. But not long after I met him, was I happy that he was there. He was a great person to have around the office and was kind and welcoming to everyone.
A quality of Justin that I could appreciate is that, as a supervisor for medical and clerical staff he had experience with a medical background. Currently, I work under a manager as a medical assistant who has not medical background. This can be frustrating as she does not understand the day to day or knowledge of medical practices. This is important to transformational leadership, as his behaviors exhibited high competence and confidence. Other behaviors that he would show are being a great role model and setting high expectations. Specific examples of this are when, as a clinic we implemented a system change. Justin being the supervisor was first to learn about the new system and took extra time to teach the system to those who were struggling and setting expectations of his team to learn the system to excel in their roles.
A way that he was able to help the clinic transform is through the rising star initiative that he started. This is something that he started at our clinic to allow appreciation to be shown for induvial in our clinic who worked especially hard that month. It is very similar to an employee of the month but the rewards include a treat at his expense. This boosted morale around the clinic and also was a great way to have new stars rise. It wasn't about appreciating the same person over and over but rather giving motivation to those who do come out of the woodworks to shine and rise. This helped with growth for much of the clinic and is the main reason I think of Justin when I think of a transformative leader.
Even after he left the clinic, he was still helping me with ways to further my career. He was a reference that I used on my resume for a few years and would keep me in mind when an interesting position came up. It was one of those leaders that you weren't with for a long time, but the impact they left was lasting.
