Summary

Management development is one of the most common forms of HRD. It should be deliberate, long-term oriented, specific to an organization, and tied to the organization's strategic plan. Although one might expect that existing research on the managerial job would provide a clear picture of what managers do, the competencies they need, and how they develop, there is much we still do not know. This chapter presents several ways this issue has been addressed and emphasizes the importance of careful study by HRD researchers and professionals to better answer questions about the managerial job when designing management development programs for their own organizations. Options for management education include college and university degree programs and executive education. In addition, organizationally based training and experience methods are discussed, including courses, programs, corporate universities, and on-the-job experiences. To illustrate some of the approaches used in management and development, two common programs are described: leadership development are presented, including transformational leadership, leaders developing leaders, and servant leadership. Behavior modeling training involves learning by observing a model perform a behavior. Trainees discuss the components of the behavior, practice the behavior by role playing, and feedback on their performance, This form of training has been effective for motor, interpersonal, and managerial skills.
