In October 2022, the New York Times reported that self-driving eighteen-wheelers are now on highways in California and Texas. It's predicted that completely autonomous driverless trucks will be on the roads at scale between 2030 and 2040, reducing fleet operating costs by 45%. Companies anticipate savings on labor and fuel costs, as well as both insurance costs since driverless trucks are generally safer than those driven by sleep-deprived, inexperienced, and supply chain operational costs.
