In order to gain insight into the management strategy related to planning and control, you will utilize Campbell Soup Company as a focus company and review their Corporate Responsibility Strategy, Campbell's alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Goal 13: Climate Action, and the Overview content of the United Nations Sustainable Goal 13 section. Assume that you were just hired as a manager in Campbell's Sustainability Group, which focuses on Goal 13. Respond to the following questions:

1. On your first day, you met with the executive team who is currently dissatisfied with Campbell's progress on addressing climate change. You have been asked to meet in one month with a plan for increasing Campbell's effectiveness in this area. Apply the steps of the planning process by addressing the following: a. Step 1: Developing an Awareness of the Present State i: Describe the purpose of this step and your role as a manager in executing its completion. ii: Based on your review of Campbell's Corporate Responsibility Strategy, summarize how their commitment to Goal 13 is consistent (or not consistent) with their corporate mission and vision. iii: Based on your review of Campbell's alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Goal 13: Climate Action, summarize their progress-to-date. b. Step 2: Establishing Outcome Statements i: Based on the current progress reviewed in the Campbell's alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Goal 13: Climate Action section, select two reported areas and develop two outcome statements (i.e. goals) for improved performance. ii: Suggest one new area where Campbell could align its efforts with Goal 13 and develop one outcome statement (i.e. goal) which supports increased performance in this area. c. Step 3: Premising (for this requirement, the Overview content of the United Nations Sustainable Goal 13 section could also provide insight). i: For the two existing areas identified in requirement 1,b,i, develop one assumption about a future event which could negatively impact the goals that you identified, and one assumption about a future event which could positively impact the same goals. ii: For the new area identified in requirement 1,b,ii, develop one assumption about a future event which could negatively impact the goal that you identified, and one assumption about a future event which could positively impact the same goal. d. Step 4: Determining a Course of Action (Action Statements) i: Provide an example of an action statement that would allow Campbell to proceed with process of achieving each of their goal statements. ii: Discuss how a manager would determine alternatives in completing this step. e. Step 5: Formulating Supportive Plans i: Describe the purpose of supportive plan(s) and how they are utilized to support the operation of the overall plan. ii: Provide one example supportive plan that could be utilized to facilitate your action statements. 2. After meeting with the executive team during the following month, you were given approval to implement your ideas related to the two existing areas and the newly suggested area. You realize that the most effective approach will be based on developing plans that will help to guide the required activities. Characterize key plans utilized to monitor and control activities by addressing the following: a. Frequency-of-Use Plans: i: Standing Plan: describe the purpose of this type of plan. Next, provide an example of a standing plan for the newly suggested area that you identified in 1,b,ii. ii: Single-Use Plan: describe the purpose of this type of plan. Next, provide an example of a single-use plan for one of the two existing areas that you identified in requirement 1,b,i. b. Time-Frame Plans: i: Differentiate between short-, medium-, and long-range plans. ii: Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing each of these plans in connection with the two existing and the newly suggested areas that you identified. c. Contingency Plans: i: Describe the purpose and necessity of this type of plan. ii: Review the one assumption about a future event that could negatively impact the newly suggested area that you identified in 1,c,ii and describe what major elements should be included in a contingency plan to address this type of risk. 3. You are encouraged with the executive team's reaction to your ideas to increase Campbell's effectiveness with Goal 13. It occurs to you that you will need to develop methods for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of your plans and the best strategy is to review the current approach. Discuss the steps of the control process and their impact on goal attainment by addressing the following: a. Establish standards: i: Define the term "standard" and indicate how this information would be utilized in the current and future planning cycle. ii: Re-enter the Campbell's alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Goal 13: Climate Action section, click on one of the two existing areas that you will be focusing on, click on the "Goals & Progress Highlights" link and select one goal (e.g. water use, etc.). Next, briefly describe the goal and the standard that is utilized to measure current progress. b. Monitor: i: For the goal selected in requirement 3,a,ii, indicate the actual performance achieved by Campbell. ii: Briefly explain what this information means. c. Compare: i: Compare the actual performance to the established standard. Indicate the difference (e.g. gallons) as well as the percentage of change provided by Campbell. d. Evaluate and take action i: Based on your comparison, interpret the results. Indicate if the difference between the standard and actual performance is good or bad news and explain why. ii: In your opinion, based on the trend shown by the data, does it appear that Campbell will meet its intended goal for the one existing area that you selected? Explain why or why not.
