In organic chemistry, the compounds are usually classified into classes depending on the functional groups. Functional group is a group of atoms within a molecule that is responsible for certain properties of the molecules and the reactions in which it takes parts.
Deduce the functional groups present in compound A&B from the following test.
a) Compound A (C, H, O) gives a sooty flame on ignition and an orange precipitate with Brady's reagent. It gives a green coloration with Fehling's solution. Compound A gives a white precipitate with bromine water but does not decolorize aqueous potassium permanganate. With neutral FeCl 3 gives a violet coloration.
b) Compound B (C,H,O) doesn't give a precipitate with Brady's reagent nor is it soluble in NaOH. The compound B gives green coloration with acidified K2Cr2O7 and cloudiness in 1 min. on reacting with conc. HCl and anhydrous ZnCl2 .
