In policework, most situations that need a resolution fall within a specific framework that has already been established by the police service. As an example; the protocol for a sexual assault case is standardized and a police officer need only follow the established guidelines to fulfill their obligations. There are cases where the problem cannot be funnelled into a specific protocol and decisions have to be made in an investigation. The question is, who should be making those decisions: the lead investigator, the supervisor or a group of officers who are asked to review the case. 1.
