Try to think of what identities can take shape in a society under constant surveillance and what cannot, and then you can link that with the unique cultural aspects of China. I'm thinking about the idea of constant surveillance and how it may shape normative identities and marginalised performances of identities may have to hide away to escape the state surveillance. You can then bring in academic literature support or media reports highlighting the lack of support marginalised communities like LGBTQI+ or any other identity that does not fit the norm in China.
