SAS is consistently ranked among the top places to work not only for their cutting-edge technology and advances, but for the culture they create for their employees. Utilizing the P-O-L-C framework allows SAS to maximize productivity, employee engagement and maintain their competitive edge in attracting new qualified candidates. SAS exceeds in all areas of the P-O-L-C framework, as described below:

Planning: this pillar is best described as setting objectives and identifying ways to achieve those objectives. Jim Goodnight, SAS CEO, said that "maintaining a culture of trust... and a commitment to continuous innovation" were two of the core principles of the company (SAS, 2021). This demonstrates that SAS has their objectives set and has mastered the way to achieve their goals.

Organizing: organizing is making sure that the resources are allocated efficiently to achieve the company's objectives. Having a well-organized company allows for teamwork, collaboration, and employee enrichment and engagement. SAS offered multiple options to their employees during the pandemic ranging from career development seminars to online exercise classes. The structure of their organization allowed SAS to continue employee engagement and enrichment virtually.

Leading: this pilar is best described as the ability to inspire others and understand their personal needs, values and goals. Working through the pandemic was uncharted territory for every company, but not all were able to maintain moral quite like SAS. According to the article, employees surveyed said they felt more connected to their colleagues and leaders while working from home than ever before. Having leaders be able to inspire and connect virtually is a difficult task, but SAS was able to do so.

Controlling: this area ensures that actions taken by managers and leaders are following the standards set by the company and that the processes are being followed consistently. During the pandemic, SAS was still focused on maintaining their company culture with their employee first approach. Maintaining this consistency, even while remote, solidifies that the policies and practices used at SAS are consistent across the board.

Utilizing the P-O-L-C framework allows SAS to achieve their goals while maintaining their mission and values to constantly be evolving and creating an employee centered organization. Large companies should consider looking at how SAS has achieved these goals, to help improve their own workplace culture.
