In response to catastrophic emergencies, the National Incident Management System (NIMS), a system that provides guidelines for common functions and terminology to support clear communication and effective collaboration in an emergency situation, has evolved to include standardization or an all hazards approach for disaster and emergency management and business continuity programs in the private and public sectors. The all hazards approach supports a general response capability that is sufficiently nimble to address a range of emergencies of different duration, scale, and cause.
