In some cultures, both matrilineal and patrilineal descent occurs, and a person belongs to both the matrilineal descent group of their mother and the patrilinea descent group of their father, but the descent groups operate in different, complimentary areas of a person's life. Everyone inherits different, nonoverlapping rights, obligations and benefits from their mother and their father.
