In the city of Battle Creek, Downtown is more of an urbanization area. BCU (Battle Creek Unlimited) is now deploying its resources in new ways to generate economic growth in a nod to urbanization, walkability and placemaking. New programs and initiatives are making way for restaurants, breweries, entertainment, and residential options (Battle Creek Unlimited). Downtown Battle Creek has changed over time. A lot of the downtown buildings sat abandoned for many years due to needing new structural work and funding to be able to turn downtown Battle Creek into the new urban area it is becoming. Cities are human made and are therefore shaped by human and not natural force (Giddens, Duneier, Appelbaum, Carr). Gentrification has played a huge role as we now have housing, breweries, parks and restaurants in the downtown area. Many people do go to these areas because there are lots of new businesses and there are many things to do in the downtown area. The architecture and design in the downtown area encourages many people to view and Interact with others and what it has to offer as we still have some of our history in it.
