In the last few weeks, we have learned about Marxist and post-colonial approaches to peace. While the two concepts are similar, they focus on disarming two different structures of domination. Marxism, which was theorized by Karl Marx, explores how structures of power are ingrained in labor and the economy (Aytak). Marx makes it clear that capitalism is structured in a way to constantly benefit the capitalists while at the cost of the workers. Marxism focuses on viewing the drawbacks of capitalism not as unintentional consequences, but as deliberate actions that are structurally necessary for the functions of capitalism (Aytak). Marx explains that capitalism fuels inter-imperial rivalry which causes political-economic phenomena like colonialism and imperialism (Aytak). Since capitalism prioritizes profit, it does not account for the negative impact of colonialism and imperialism. The concept of structuralism explains how capitalism supports and aids global elites to gain more wealth, while creating more injustices for the large majority of the rest of the population (Aytak). This is because capitalism is an economic system that allows capitalists to reap the benefits of the working class' labor, while offering the working class minimal benefits (Aytak).
