In the lessons, we looked into some of the realities of litigation. The fact that many firms, which are quite skilled at trial work, do not work on appeals or collections, and the different skills and knowledge bases necessary to be ethically competent to work in those additional areas. Specifically, we reviewed federal laws such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and the ethical challenges of overseeing non-lawyer conduct in these areas. We also noted that states have consumer protection laws as well.

In your initial post, address the following prompts:

• Identify one consumer protection law in Louisiana that a paralegal would need to be mindful of if engaging in collection activity for a client.
• Provide the name of the law and the citation or ordinance, and a brief description of the consumer protection it provides.
• Conclude by explaining why it is important for a paralegal to be aware of that law before engaging in collection activity in your state.
• Please try not to duplicate a law already described by a classmate, and if you cannot find anything from your state, or nothing that hasn't already been described, you can use a different state not yet discussed.
