In the mid-1970s, video players were just beginning to become available for home use. Two formats of such video players came on the market, Betamax and Video Home System (VHS). Although experts believed Betamax was superior to VHS VHS took the lead and dominated the home video market until Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) came on the market. Why did VHS beat Betamax? Network goods are usually sold by monopolies or oligopolies. Competition for network goods is good for the market. The market locked in on the good that was not necessarily the "best" network good All of these conditions contributed to the success of VHS
