In this activity, make a continuum of interpersonal and sexual violence. In order to begin the activity, draw a line across a horizontal piece of paper. At one end write "not recognized" and at the other end right "always recognized." Then, chart what interpersonal and sexual behaviors are always recognized as being inappropriately violent. Then, move to the other end of the line and chart which behaviors are less universally recognized. Place these behaviors in order of their recognition by society as being inappropriate. By the end of this activity you should have a full continuum illustrating societal recognition of inappropriate interpersonal and sexually violent behaviors.

What makes these behaviors inappropriate? Are these behaviors always inappropriate? In what contexts may they be more or less appropriate? Do other social identities such as race, economic background, or sexual orientation matter? How does societal recognition contribute to the persistence of a culture of rape and sexually violent behaviors in our society?
