In this module, we’ve learned a great deal about Alexander the Great, his father, Philip II, and their accomplishments in spreading Greek culture and establishing an empire. The respect (and disdain) they both garnered from their contemporaries is well documented, and much of what we know about both men from historical scholarship focuses primarily on their rule. Because much of that scholarship rests upon the accomplishments and success both men enjoyed during their reign, for this discussion, ask yourself:
Between the two, Alexander or his father, Philip II, who do you think really deserves to be called "The Great" and why?
Your response must include:
- 1) at least three different rationale or criteria that you think are essential in determining which ruler was "greater". Make sure to label these.
- 2) specific comparisons and examples that support your reasoning and describe why your chosen rationale supports your chosen leader as deserving of the name "Great".
