In this paper, we examine another dominant discourse in the field: productionism, i.e., the tendency to reduce the complex food security issue to a need to increase production. For this purpose, we develop two interlinked hypotheses. The first regards the institutions in the global food security field. At the macroinstitutional level, we argue that the 2007/2008 crisis provided an opportunity for states and organizations advocating productionist stances to regain a central position. At the micro-institutional level, until very recently, food security/insecurity measurement tools were almost exclusively focused on food availability and therefore on production. Our second hypothesis points to the relative influence of civil society movements and large firms in the debate. Thanks to their abundant resources, TNCs are able to promote their productivist interests in the various influential forums and arenas of the global food security field, while civil society actors, whose interests, values and visions diverge dramatically from those of the firms, have fewer resources available to promote their positions
