In this report you will examine leadership styles and explore how these styles can impact employee performance and job satisfaction. (the leadership styles from lecture are: democratic leadership, authoritarian leadership, laissez-faire leadership, charismatic leadership, transformational leadership, transactional leadership, and servant leadership.)

You should also conduct your own research using outside scholarly sources. Your outside sources must be cited in APA format, with a reference list provided at the end of your narrative.

To begin, fill in the table provided in Appendix A of this document. As you complete the table, consider using bullet points to help you separate and organize information. Each row of the table represents a different leadership style. There are seven leadership styles. One leadership style has been given to you in the table as an example. For each row, please do the following within the table in your own words:

  • Select a leadership style for each row and fill in the leadership style cell with its name.
  • Briefly define and describe the leadership style.
    • In your description, make sure to detail any important identifying characteristics of the leadership style.
  • Explain how the leadership style positivley and/or negatively impacts employees' performance and job satisfaction.
    • When considering employee performance, you might reflect on these questions: Are employees generally effective under this leadership style? Do they tend to provide quality work? Are they efficient? Do they perform their required tasks? Do they go above and beyond what is required or asked?
    • Job satisfaction refers to whether employees like their job or individual facets of their job.

As noted, the transformational leadership row has been completed for you as an example. From this row, you can see that the "leadership style" cell is filled in with the name of the leadership style. The "definition/brief description" cell highlights some of the important aspects and characteristics of the leadership style. Finally, the "impacts on employees' performance/job satisfaction" cell details the ways that the leadership style tends to affect employee performance and satisfaction in the workplace.

Once you have completed the table, write a narrative at least 750 words in length in which you address the following prompts. Be sure to also include introduction and conclusion paragraphs.

  • Identify and explain any key similarities and differences you notice across the leadership styles in your table. Compare and contrast the leadership styles in your table.
  • Describe your most recent boss or supervisor.
    • Label your most recent boss/supervisor's leadership style by selecting one or more of the styles described in your table. Justify your rationale by giving examples of things your boss/supervisor did or said and explain how they showed a particular leadership style.
    • Assess what impact your boss/supervisor's leadership style had on your performace and job satisfaction.
  • Finally, select and defend which leadership style you think is best for a boss or supervisor to have in the workplace.

Your report (table and narrative) should be submitted as a Word Document.A template for the organization of your narrative is provided below the table in Appendix A of this document (beginning on page 5).

Impacts on Employees' Performance/Job Satisfaction

Transformational Leadership

  • Transformational leadership is when the leader transforms their employees by appealing to their beliefs. The leader attempts to link employees' sense of self to company mission, vision, and values.
  • A transformational leader is inspirational, leads by example, and works together with employees to identify problems and promote change within an organization.
  • Transformational leaders positively impact employees' performance because they are motivated to be a part of the solution to something that needs to be changed or addressed within the organization.
  • Employees tend to be satisfied with this kind of leadership because they feel valued and trusted, and are given individual attention through motivational and inspirational words.
