In today's lesson, we're going to read two excerpts from Ojibway writer, Richard Wagamese's novel, Keeper 'n Me.This novel is a beautifully written reflection on the ways the children of the Sixties Scoop lost their identities and the impact this loss had on many of their lives. It is also a redemptive story as it traces the journey of the main character, Garnet Raven, as he reclaims his Indigenous identity.

The Sixties Scoop refers to the Canadian practice of removing Indigenous children from their homes and placing them in foster care or putting them up for adoption into mostly non-Indigenous homes. The practice actually began in the 1950's and continued into the 1980's. Tens of thousands of Indigenous children were removed from their homes, often as newborn babies, and many ended up in the child welfare system.

Your assignment for today is to read two excerpts from Richard Wagamese's novel, Keeper 'n Me. While the novel is a work of fiction, it reflects the author's own experience of being taken from his family and moved into foster care.
