Individual Take-Home Exam Cover Page MGBL853 Fall 2015 Professor Jana Raver This is an individual take home exam worth 25% of your course grade. This exam paper has 2 pages. Please read the instructions below carefully before you begin. Instructions: There are two sections to this exam. The first section refers to the attached case, \"The careless collaborators\" (see Appendix). The second section pertains to insights derived from specific course materials as detailed below. Each section has a specific length limitation; these are specified at the end of the description of the requirements for each section. The length limitations are based on the following formatting requirements for each 8.5 x 11 inch page: minimum 1 inch margins, minimum 12-point Times New Roman font, with double-spaced text. Material that exceeds the length limits will not be included in the assessment of the section. I stop reading at the page limitation so please ensure that anything you want to be graded is included within the limits. Include your name on a cover page for your assignment. In addition, number the pages in your assignment by placing a number in the upper-right header of each page. Submit your completed exam, as a Word document, to the D2L course dropbox folder, labeled \"Individual Take-Home Exam.\" The deadline to submit your document to the D2L system is Sunday, October 18 before noon. Submissions received after this time will be subject to the late penalty specified in the course syllabus (i.e., 5% off the total assignment grade for each day (24-hour period) that it is late). Note, it is expected that answers will be supported by course materials. High-quality answers will make frequent and specific use of learnings from our readings and in-class sessions. Academic Integrity: This is an individual assignment. You are not allowed to consult with anyone else (except your professor) regarding this exam or discuss in any way your views and ideas. Doing so constitutes a violation of academic integrity. Recall that all student submissions in D2L are automatically processed through a plagiarism detection tool (TurnItIn) and we are obligated to investigate any violations of academic integrity. Please ensure that everything you write is original content that you produced. 2 Exam Sections and Requirements Part A: (worth 65% of exam total) Refer to the case in the Appendix of this exam paper, \"The Careless Collaborators.\" Drawing from course material (i.e., articles, books, in-class sessions), analyze this case with regard to the following four areas: 1. Cooperation: To what extent did the ISRG team build trust at the outset of their third (current) project? How did cultural differences influence trust? (worth 15%) 2. Convergence: Analyze the ISRG's degree of convergence (including purpose and principles) throughout the team. To what extent were practices aligned with their purpose? How did cultural differences influence convergence? (worth 15%) 3. Communication and Decision-Making: Analyze the cultural differences in communication, decision-making, and disagreeing that emerged in the ISRG team. How did these differences influence the team's effectiveness? (worth 20%) 4. Capability: To what extent did the ISRG team effectively leverage their capabilities and therefore solve problems effectively together? Be sure to draw from the PADIL framework. In what specific ways could their implementation (execution) have been improved? (worth 15%) The maximum length for all components of Part A is 5 pages of double-spaced text. If you would like to include any exhibits/tables/appendices, they must be included within this 5-page limit. Part B: (worth 35% of exam total) Based upon course materials and in-class content on global virtual team coordination - especially Brake's book, \"Where in the world is my team?\" - answer the following questions: 1. Global Coordination: Describe a 'best practice' virtual global office workspace. Be sure to include details on the specific coordination tools (e.g., asynchronous, synchronous, and other tools) that this global online platform should include, and justify your choices by linking these tools to the 6 Cs. (worth 15%) 2. Communication Plan: Imagine that you work at a multinational high-tech manufacturing firm and you have been promoted to your first Team Leader position. As part of the company's IT Infrastructure team, you are responsible for ensuring reliable and cutting-edge computer systems that enable all of your firm's activities - from design to engineering to project management to manufacturing. Your company has outsourced its basic run-and-maintain IT activities, ensuring that the remaining IT staff are well-educated, high-performing employees capable of designing and maintaining your company's complex network and server infrastructure. Your challenge is that your team is globally distributed yet you must collaboratively design and execute projects that have sequential and pooled interdependence. Most of your projects are moderately sized and have quick turnaround times (2-3 months). You will lead this team from your company headquarters in Toronto, but the rest of your team is globally dispersed as follows: 2 team members in New Delhi, India; 2 team members in Shanghai, China; 1 team member in Dublin, Ireland; and 1 team member in Houston, Texas (USA); and 1 team member in Mexico City, Mexico. Based upon this scenario, develop a communication and coordination plan for your team. Include details on how and when you intend to communicate, the technology that you will use, and any other virtual coordination mechanisms that will keep your team on track. (worth 20%) The maximum length for all components of Part B is 3 pages of double-spaced text. If you would like to include any exhibits/tables/appendices, they must be included within this 3-page limit. 3 Appendix 4 5 6 7 8
