Industry Exploration assignment I want you to pick FOOD TRUCK topic
What?
This assignment draws on the Sharing Memories Activity from our Looking Back on Your Program ( https://www.centennialcollege.ca/programs-courses/full-time/hotel-operations-management-online ) page (Week 2-3) from asks you to investigate a topic of your choosing and to share your findings with some of your classmates. Your topic should fit into one of the following broad categories:
Category 1 - A Subsector of Your Industry
By "Your Industry", we mean the broad industry related to your program (ex: Food & Beverage, Events, Hotel Operations, etc.). There are many sectors of each industry that we simply do not have time to explore in a four semester program.
Below are some examples of industry subsectors, but don't let yourself be limited by the examples.
Hospitality - Hotel Operations
Subsectors might include: cruise lines; casinos and entertainment; resorts; adventure tourism; short-stay rentals (ex: AirBNB); amusements or even guest transportation.
Food & Beverage
Subsectors could include: food trucks; brewing, distilling, wine-making; coffee and tea service; events; food tourism or retail/grocery.
Events
Subsectors of the events industry could include: virtual events; weddings; non-profit fundraising; lighting and audio visual or destination social events.
Why?
A four-semester diploma program does not provide adequate time to explore each and every topic that a hospitality student might want to learn about. Additionally, each student will have very different areas of interest. As part of reflecting on your program and what it taught you, we would like to give you a chance to explore some of the gaps in your learning or to delve into an area about which you are particularly passionate. Not only will this assignment enhance your industry knowledge (which you can discuss in an interview), but it could help direct your career path as you prepare to graduate.
Instructions:
# Research your chosen topic, finding a variety of articles and videos to help you learn more. Your articles do not need to be scholarly or academic; in fact, the best articles will probably come from industry or professional websites related to your topic.
#Share your findings with your classmates by pickingone row in the table below ( i picked here classmate named ABC and their work( answer) for reference)
# and filling in the requested information.
# TIP: Review the table below first, to determine what information is required. This will help to guide your research..
Example answer by the professor:
Example: Professor, Hospitality - Hotel Operations | Example: I have chosen the private club sector. This is where I had my first job in hospitality and I have been interested in it ever since. I think this sector provides great career opportunities that people often overlook in favour of working in hotels or restaurants. | Example:

| [Visit some of the links shared by your classmates and share two interesting things that you learned]. | Example: Not really. However, my program is called "hotel operations", so it's understandable. If we were to learn more about the private club sector, maybe it could be in Introduction to Hospitality. Or, we could learn about career options in private clubs in Career Prep. Although I'd love to take a whole course about club operations, there's probably not space in a four semester program. | Example: Yes. I love private clubs because they provide a chance to build connections by serving the same guests (ie: club members) all the time. Additionally, these members really value and appreciate exceptional service. I think most things I've learned in my program could be helpful in the private club sector. I've learned how to provide professional service, which would be very important in an exclusive setting. Smart Serve, Food Handler and It's Your Shift certifications would be helpful in the F&B roles outlined in the job posting. |
Example answer by the Classmate name ABC:
name ABC, Hospitality Hotel Operation management | The subsector that I chose is the AirBnB sector. I have personally found it quite interesting to see the diversity in the quality and pricing of some of the AirBnB's as I have been looking at AirBnB rentals recently when I was planning my trip to different areas of Nigeria for almost a month and I am looking at more for my trip back to Nigeria in August this year. I found the differences between Lagos, Ikeja and Benin to be very different in price as well as what I was paying for in size and quality of the place. I think it is interesting to see how people charge the prices for their rentals and the fact that there are short term and long term rentals through AirBnB which can be more economical than staying at a hotel for an extended period of time. | 1. I learned that The Association of Independent Hospitality Professionals (AHIP) and ThinkReservations collaborated with AirBnB in over 191 countries to find a better way of advertising rooms that are available for guests to rent. The AHIP members can then get the guests details and receive their booking. 2. The video showed me how easy it is to book an AirBnB just by putting in where you want to stay and the dates you are looking at. It provides you with options from thousands of places from a room, an apartment, a condominium and even an entire house. They will even put you in touch with the host of the AirBnB so that you can discuss directly with them what you are looking for on your arrival. It is a simple process when you go onto AirBnB.com. 3. The job posting is for a Policy Associate with AirBnB in Mexico City, Mexico. It is a position that highlights the benefits of having AirBnB's and the legislation that is required to operate them. This position involves politicians, regulators and thecommunity to find the best ways to run any AirBnB in a community. | ABC commented about others | We did not really get into a lot of details about AirBnB's in Hotel Operations Management during the courses we took but there was mention of the different types of accommodations that are available. I think that AirBnB's and the aspects of them could be included in the Room Operations course that we took in Semester 3. | Working in the AirBnB sector is something I might consider in the future once my youngest kids have moved out on their own. I really enjoy people and I think that having the ability to have people from all over the world stay in my home would be incredible just on the basis of getting to know about different cultures and the possibility of makling connections and friends with new people from around the world. The skills that I have now would be communication, guest experiences, public relations, problem solving, interpersonal and professionalism. These would all be used when dealing with guests who may stay at my home if I had an AirBnB. |
