ING102V/5/SEMR1/19/20( hand-out
The fresh feed to the process (75.16mol% Hydrogen, 24.57mol% Nitrogen and 0.27mol%
Argon) is mixed with the recycle flow before entering the reactor. Analysis shows that the
reactor feed is 79.52 mol% Hydrogen Hydrogen and Nitrogen react in the reactor to give
Ammonia according to the equation
3H2+N2clyst2NH3
After leaving the reactor the gases pass to the Ammonia separator that removes all the
Ammonia formed in the reactor. After the separator the stream contains 80.01mol%
Hydrogen. Part of this stream is purged and the remainder mixed with fresh feed before
entering the reactor.
a) Draw a diagram of the system, number all the stream flowrates (i.e.F1,F2,F3 etc) and label
all the compositions in each stream. Use the following notation in the subscripts to denote the
compositions: H for hydrogen, N for nitrogen, A for argon and M for ammonia (i.e. Wh for
the mol fraction of hydrogen in stream F2 and WN2 for nitrogen in stream 2 etc.
b) Assuming the conversion of hydrogen in the reactor is "f", write the material balance around
reactor for the following compositions:
(i) Hydrogen
(ii) Nitrogen
(iii) Argon
(iv) Ammonia
c) If the flow rate of the recycle stream is 900mols-1 determine the flow rate of the fresh feed
and the reactor feed.
