1. Solar Insolation We will be using the term Solar Insolation a lot in this course, and your probably have not used it before. Numerical activity: a) Melbourne has an annual solar irradiation of 1679 kWh/m2/year. Calculate the average Solar Insolation in Wm 2 (averaged over one day and one square meter). Hint: remember kWh is a measure of energy and not power. b) c) A solar panel receives 990 W of solar insolation over 1 day. Calculate the area of the panel if the average solar insolation is 180 Wm. Australia receives approximately 58 million PJ or radiation per year (1 PJ = 1 x 105 J). Calculate the average Solar Insolation in Wm . The area of Australia is about 7.7 x 106 km. (Hint: be very careful with converting units) Conceptual activity: In this course we will usually use values for the Solar Insolation defined for a particular location and averaged over 24 hours, and per square meter. Discuss what this means. Why do we use Solar Insolation per day and per square meter rather than the actual Solar Insolation at a particular time of day? Is Solar Insolation a measure of power or energy?
