Instructions- Read the paragraph below; there will be two questions below the paragraph. You are not answering the questions by saying yes or no. You are answering the questions as if you were the counselor and how would you respond to what Harold said by coming up with questions to ask Harold?
Counselor- Hi, Harold. Welcome to the high school counselor's office. I saw your request to talk to me in my dropbox. It sounds like there are some things on your mind that you wanted to speak about today.
Harold-Yeah, my friend Jody said she would come to talk to you when things were bothering her. She said that you were cool. So, I figured I would try to talk to you too.
Counselor-Yes, Jody's awesome. I'm so glad she encouraged you to speak with me. Before we get started, I just want to let you know that this office is a safe space. Everything that we say in this room will stay between you and me, but sometimes I might have to tell someone else what's going on if you tell me you are going to hurt yourself or someone else. So tell me what brought you in?
Harold- Well, you know I love football. It's a big part of my life. Honestly, it's the most important thing in my life. I never knew my dad. So, coach has kind of been like a dad the whole time 've been in high school. My mom really doesn't care what I do as long as I don't get locked up. Do you know that I've been playing football since I was 10 years old, and I can probably count how many football games she's been to. My mom can either be at work or with some man. None of her boyfriends have ever liked me. I don't know why, but I've never gotten along with a single mad, she stated. I use football to get out of the house, but I feel like that's all about to come to an end. So, Jody and I have been friends since middle school. She probably more like of my best friends but everybody thinks that we date. I told her that thought one of the other boys on the football team was attractive. Ever since then I really haven't been attracted to girls. I've been playing football for a long time though. I'm getting recruited. I'm a football player and ever since I started playing football, my teammates have joked and talked about gay people. Last weekend I sent her a text with a picture of my celebrity crush. I told her all the stuff I wish I could do with him. One of her friends took her phone and read my messages. Now this friend knows, and she dates one of my teammates. It's only a matter of time before everybody knows, which means my life is over here. Football is the only thing that I have to get out of my mom's house. It's what keeps me away from my mom and her boyfriend. It gave me the closest thing I have to a dad and it's about to be taken away. I know it's not Jodi fault and I don't blame her, but my life and the only thing I care about. Her friend has a big mouth and once the rest of the team knows about me it's over for me. I almost didn't come to school today. Football was supposed to be my way out, but that's about to go away. Without football I have nothing. I am nothing. I can't be anything. I have no brothers, sisters, or uncles or aunts. My grandparents won't even talk to us because my mom messed that up with her ways. As soon as everybody finds out, my life will be over, and I don't want to be around for this. I've been thinking about this all weekend. I think everything would be better if I wasn't on this earth. I want to sleep and never wake up. I don't want to live anymore.
