The power system of a modern passenger aircraft is the key to the aircraft's performance and energy efficiency, and meeting customers' expectation of travel range. Your group are working as a sub-team with tasks to analyse the power system requirements of a new passenger aircraft that is currently in the planning stage. The aircraft will compete primarily with Airbus A340-300. Your primary task is to show that the engine parameters proposed imply a strongly competitive power system with both good thrust performance and energy economy. You will make a final presentation to the Product Manager who is responsible for the launch of the new aircraft.
Tasks
1. Benchmarking: Find at least one other similar power system from different manufacturers. Briefly list their specifications and possible images/drawings of the aircraft and power system. Find the maximum thrust, fuel consumption and other relevant data of the current Airbus A340-300.
2. and published longest range (in your report you need demonstrate the source of your data). Using possible published data and some assumed specifications, estimate the mass flow rate and the exhaust exit velocities of the main nozzle and the bypass flow, and calculating the propulsive efficiency.
3. For your design, using your power system parameters, thrust requirement during taking off, cruise, landing and taxiing, estimate the max range of your aircraft. You need find the optimal bypass ratio for optimizing the fuel consumption of your design.
4. Based on your design and proposed operating parameters, analyse the ideal cycle of your gas turbine engine, and find the cycle efficiency of your design.
5. Estimate the total CO2 emissions based on the max aircraft range.
