Instructions: You have just been selected by the Emperor to design and select the decoration for a new religious structure (temple, sanctuary, synagogue, church, mosque, catacomb, martyrium). You may use examples of art and architecture from Aegean and Ancient Greece; Etruscan and Early Roman; Imperial and Late Roman; Byzantine and the Islamic World to build your structure or use them as inspiration to design your own new creation.

Requirements:

  • State the name of the structure(s) and period of the works that you select (such as ancient Greek) or were inspired by in your finished assignment.
  • Each design must contain the following elements: type of religious structure (temple/sanctuary, layout/building plan, key architectural/structural features, and decoration. Use the instructions and questions under each heading as a guide to help you design your creation. Required structure elements and questions to address in your finished assignment: 1. Type of religious structure,
  • What kind of religious are you constructing? If it is a church, is it a martyrium? monastery? Etc. If it is a temple, is it in a city or a rural sanctuary with other buildings?
  • Share your vision here. Describe what function your building will serve in the religious community, what activities will take place, does it have a name? A relic? 2. Layout/building plan,
  • Will your church be centrally-planned? Or longitudinal? Something else?
  • Describe the plan, even if you directly borrow one from your book.
  • An image of the layout/building or sanctuary plan. Images can be borrowed directly from existing structures or you can draw/design your own. 3. Architectural/structure features,
  • Will your building have a dome (where)? Ambulatory? Side-aisles? Baptistery? Monks quarters? or is it Doric or Ionic style? ) You must select at least FOUR architectural/structural features that we have studied so far.
  • Describe these architectural/structural features even if you directly borrow one from the learning modules. (I.e. how is the dome supported? Is there a clerestory?)
  • Images of at least two (2) of the architectural/structural elements that you use in your design. Images can be borrowed directly from existing structures or you can draw/create your own.
  • This is a good opportunity to use your vocabulary words, dont be shy! 4. Decoration,
  • What kind of decoration(s) (mosaic? Painted?)
  • What part of your religious structure will feature the most elaborate decoration? Why?
  • What are the subjects of your decoration? Why? Be as specific as possible
  • Select at least THREE different decorative features. (These can both be mosaics, but they cannot both be apse mosaics unless you have two apses in your church)
  • Describe the subject matter and meaning/significance for each decorative element even if you borrow them directly from the book.
  • Include a brief description telling me why you selected each.
  • How do they contribute to the overall vision of your church?
  • One (1) image for each of the three (3) of the different decorative features you select to help illustrate your point. This can be an image of a decorative element from a building studied in or class or you can draw your own.
