International companies with foreign subsidiaries, distributors, partnerships, or supplier relationships around the world, face a major challenge of managing cultural differences. In many countries, it is customary to receive and give gifts in the process of initially setting up and throughout the business relationships. In certain countries, some officials demand payments before granting approval for new construction projects and or to import products into that country. Note this practice is sometimes a cultural necessity in some countries, especially in newly developing markets where capitalism has not yet developed to the point where the practice of giving and receiving gifts and graft are frowned upon or illegal.
