Intervention is the placement of a specific change in time while in process that can either affect or alter the outcome. For example, currently, nurses take information about a patient from what is called “handoffs” from the prior shift of nurses. These handoffs are essential to understanding the conditions of their patients from the last 12 hours. An intervention to this process may include a hospitalist joining the handoff to also gather information about the patient and provide medical advice vs. what current physicians do now as they gather information midway through the day to assess their patients. If they were to have the information at the beginning of their rotation, physicians could provide better and quicker care to patients. This intervention to allow adjustments to a process can alter the outcome of patient care. Neil (2019) suggests for real change to occur, the whole community needs to be engaged. The community of nurses, physicians, and non-clinical personnel depend on each other to make significant changes and sustain them thereon after creating patient care improvement.
Two methods that promote sustainability of evidence-based intervention (EBIs) are priority setting for sustainability and the NHS sustainability model. Davies, Trembley, and Edwards (2017) suggest developers suggest that this model [NHS] is useful for planning specific sustained EBP changes at the team, organizational, or community level. As barriers and roadblocks are bound to be an issue at some point, having a method to potentially avoid these issues will assist in the sustainability of the process. As the next steps to my process for the UV light disinfection of patient rooms are underway, having the NHS sustainability model will allow for my project to be more equipped with the understanding that barriers can be foreshadowed and also managed appropriately.
1. According to the statement above what can ine agree and or disagree with ? please answer in 200 words.
Interventions that are sustainable ensure that the requested changes in behavior or process are adequately adopted and maintained after initiating the plan. This entails that the desired outcome will be kept over the long term and will not resort back to its original ways. For example, one study that evaluated how people can adopt more sustainable food behaviors found that interventions mitigated individual barriers for changing one’s diets and was able to positively impact one’s awareness, intention, and behavior, which was able to be kept after the intervention ended (Trewern et al., 2022). This example demonstrates that in order for planned changes to be kept after the projected plan period, there needs to be proper planning and measures taken to ensure the targeted audience is able to maintain the change. Unreasonable goals and outcomes for plan interventions should be avoided because they will ultimately lead to failures because of how unattainable they are over the long term. One method that promotes sustainability of evidence-based interventions is to continue the use of program components at sufficient levels of intensity for the achieving sustainable program goals and population outcomes when pursuing changes in healthcare (Shelton et al., 2018). This method involves evaluating the effectiveness of planned interventions and determining whether certain aspects of the plan need to be adjusted to ensure they are meeting the ever-changing needs of the population that it is being directed towards. Another method involves predicting post-funding sustainability of the program and the supporting resources that are needed to ensure long-term success of the program (Tibbits et al., 2010). This is an essential component of evaluating evidence-based interventions because finances play an important aspect in influencing the successful adoption of a planned change. For instance, a company that runs out of funding for establishing a new program will be forced to stop the changes enacted with the program initiation, which would negatively impact the longevity of the requested plans. Both of these methods would need to be used to address the nutrition education intervention programs that are outlined within my project plan because the financial aspects and targeted audience approval will influence how successful the program is over the long term. Also, changes in the acceptance of the program by the community will impact how the registered dietitians will create and distribute nutrition educational materials.
