Introduction As someone who always listens to music and is always up to date with current music, I had the feeling that hit songs aren't as big anymore. There wasn't really that 'one song' of the year that everyone was singing in the hallways of school. An article from Global News stated that total album consumption of current music fell by 1.4 per cent in the first half of 2022 compared to a year ago and catalogue music (material more than 18 months old) is up by 14 per cent (Cross, 2022). This could be a reasoning behind why even the biggest song at the moment is not reaching a big audience, eventually dying out quick. This led me to investigate whether the life span of the number one song on Billboard hot 100 charts decreased over time since the year 2000. The Billboard Hot 100 is the music industry standard record chart in the United States for songs. It is updated every week by Billboard magazine and the rankings are based on sales, radio play, and online streaming. Therefore, the number one song of the week denes what was the most popular song based on multiple different factors. The list first began in 1958 and is still being continued to be updated today. Music has always been a big part of my life. Especially the genre of hip-hop, I loved exploring new artists all the time and listening to full albums to understand each artist's life stories. Music also is a medium that allows me to think about the past and feel nostalgia. Listening to hit songs from my childhood makes me feel a special way that I've never experienced elsewhere. I thought doing this project would be interesting for me as it allows me to explore what hit songs have existed in the past and how long they were popular for. The Plan To investigate how long songs stayed at the number 1 spot on billboard, I will use Wikipedia as Wikipedia has the entire history of the number-one singles on the Billboard hot 100, including when each song entered the chart and how long they stayed for. I will be using these dates to calculate the number of days from January 1st 2000, which will help create a time frame. I Since there is a large sample of number 1 songs, I will pick the top 5 number 1 songs on Billboard that stayed the longest on the charts for each year as the representative sample. This is an appropriate sample as these songs would represent the most popular songs of the year and there are many songs that only stayed number 1 for 1-2 weeks which would not be a good representation of popular songs of that year. I will use the top 5 number 1 songs on Billboard that stayed the longest on the charts for each year as the y variable and number of days since January 1st 2000 as the x variable to look for a correlation. I will be using a scatter plot to nd a trend. It will determine whether the data shows a positive correlation, negative correlation, or no correlation at all.
