INTRODUCTION

Forklift truck (FLT) and Material Handling Equipment (MHE) safe operations are necessary to be taught, understood, and enforced in all workplaces that use these essential material movers. A lot of time, care, and thought have gone into the scope of the training, program, maintenance, and accident prevention measures to minimize FLT and MHE injuries. This in-class assignment entails the identification of elements that should be included in a Pedestrian Safety Program for your company. Pedestrian safety is not a specific part of any legislation or regulation and is not very well covered in forklift truck guidelines or standards.

INSTRUCTIONS Assume you work for a large warehouse of consumer products for the cleaning industry. All product comes palletized and wrapped from 10 shipping and receiving docks. The product is stored in your 400,000 square foot (sq/ft) warehouse on racking systems until it needs to be shipped to stores and points of sale. Your employees operate the forklifts, and there are many re-packing areas where pallets are taken, so employees will break down the bulk pallets and sort the product. The individual products will be repacked for individual distribution. There are approximately 15 propane-powered forklifts, 10 electric pallet movers, and 5 electric order pickers in the warehouse. There are 150 employees for repackaging and sorting. This is on each shift, with two 8-hour shifts per day.

1. Three to Five Safe Operating Procedures or Practices that Forklift Operators must follow in order to reduce the risk of Pedestrian accidents. i.e. Always stop at every intersection and blind spot and sound your horn before proceeding.

2. Three to Five Pedestrian Rules or Directives you think that all pedestrians should have to follow and adhere to in order to reduce the risk of forklift accidents, i.e. Give forklifts and MHEs the right of way as they cant stop on a dime, and

3. Three to Five Company Rules or Directives for all employees to follow in order to make the facility safer i.e. Everyone must wear reflective vests in the facility at all times.
