Investing in stadiums is a complex decision that requires careful consideration on a case-by-case basis. Nevertheless, Matheson's (2019) analysis demonstrates the lack of justification for such actions. Stimulating the local economy by attracting tourists and creating some jobs cannot exceed all possible difficulties and disadvantages. In my opinion, such public investments can only be made after addressing the far more important problems of any region, including crime, poverty, or disruption to the integrity and sustainability of the environment. The opportunity cost of public spending often offsets the supposed economic boost. Moreover, not all people enjoy or are interested in sport or visit such places, and the channeling of funds to satisfy the contentious and non-essential interests of a smaller section of society is, at the very least, questionable. Adding to the obvious unsuitability of such a solution are the massive negative impacts in the form of worsening traffic, noise and light pollution, increased anxiety index, and the cost of stadium maintenance. For this reason, the money is more efficiently used for public goods and services like education or infrastructure improvements that are truly beneficial to the community.
