Social cognition is a branch of social psychology that studies how social enviroments affect cognition. Rosser-Majors (2017) says, "Social cognition considers how individuals percieve and store information and form memories about other people and social events" (Ch 4. Introduction). Social cognitive theory evolved from social learning theory. The new theory would place greater emphasis on self-efficacy rather than modeling (Rosser-Majors, 2017). This focus led to the belief that individuals were more likely to complete a task if they maintained a positive view of their abilities. This brought awareness to adjustments that can be made in learning situations to learn more effectively.
My parents divorced when I was 17. The years leading up to the divorce was filled with verbal arguments that had been occuring almost every day for as long as I could remember. My younger self viewed this as normal thinking that all married couples argued this often. I got into my first serious relationship when I was sixteen and displayed the model I was shown. I did not have skills to properly communicate which would result in me starting verbal arguments. As time went on, I got the opportunity to see other relationships and come to realize that extent of arguing was not normal. I had to work on accomodating my schema for communication and healthy relationships. Since I had witnessed this model during the most developmental years of my life, it is something I have to maintain awareness of. My parents divorced 10 years ago and witnessing their verbal arguments still has effects on my adult life.
Reciprocal determinism refers to the relationship between behavioral, personal and enviromental factors. Bandura theorized how these three factors can effect each other. I experienced the affect of my enviroment of school changing and it changed my personal perspective. My first year of college was directly after high school and I was taking five classes at one time in a major I quickly realized was not for me. The classes challenged me in a way I was not prepared for and the rigorous schedule overwhelmed me. I dropped out for a few years and started taking online classes which changed my previous negative association towards college. I started taking classes that interested me and I began to enjoy learning. This has allowed me t progress in my academic career.
