It is proposed to build a new police station in a town in NE Kentucky. A 4-Story building with a footprint of 100 ft by 40 ft is proposed. The proposed basic structural system is ordinary composite reinforced concrete shear walls with steel elements to resist lateral loading (R=5). The weight of each floor is 210 Kips and the weight of the roof is 120 kips. The bays & heights dimensions are as shown in the Figures below. The foundation will be constructed on rock.
Using ASCE 7 simplified earthquake design approach:
1. Find the Design base shear for the station
2. Find the respective vertical distribution of base shear per floor
3. Find the diaphragm load distribution per floor
4. Find the loads for all shear walls per floor if each floor is constructed so as to be rigid horizontal diaphragm.
5. Should diagonal bracing struts be used at exterior walls in place of shear walls, find the design loads for each floor (assuming tension bracing only is contributing to lateral resistance).
