It is proposed to deduct the variation of the thermal efficiency as a function of the condenser pressure for an ideal steam Rankine cycle with superheat. The boiler operates at a pressure of 10 bar and the steam is superheated to 550 C. The feed pump work is minimal and can be neglected. In order to have an idea on the general trend, the efficiency is to be compared for two different condenser pressures: 10 kPa and 20 kPa. For the higher pressure, it was found to be 29.4%. a) Draw a block diagram of the plant, define the various processes of the cycle and show them on a T-s diagram. b) Calculate the cycle efficiency for the lower condenser pressure of 10 kPa. c) Discuss your results and explain the trend. d) Is there a limit to increasing the efficiency through the condenser pressure? Why?
