It was a lovely spring day in Manhattan, and Ariel was having lunch with her friend, Beatrice at an outside table on the patio of a bistro. As they were talking, Ariels saw her former roommate, Candy, who had move out the month before, pass by on the street carrying a very expensive Chanel handbag. Convinced it were hers (since she hadnt seen them since Candy moved out), Ariel ran up to Candy, grabbed the purse from Candys hand, and took off down the street. Beatrice watched the entire scene from the table. While it was happening, unbeknownst to Beatrice, Dexter grabbed Beatrices backpack (that contained her laptop) that she had hung on the back of her chair. When Beatrice saw Ariel grab the purse from Candy, Beatrice screamed, causing Dexter to drop the backpack. Dexter fled down the street and into the nearest subway station. Disappointed that he didnt get the backpack and needing money, Dexter, unbeknownst to the passenger standing next to him, reached into the passengers pocket hoping to steal his wallet, but the passengers pocket was empty. Meanwhile, inside the bistro, Mike, the manager, was working at the front counter, and in addition to managing the staff, part of his duties included working the cash register. Each day, the bistro stocked free samples of pies and cakes available to customers at the counter where the cash register was. Evan, armed with a water gun in his pocket, demanded that Mike empty the cash drawer into a bag and hand it over to him or else. Afraid of being shot, Mike did as Evan instructed. To protect against losing large sums of money, it was the bistros policy to keep the cash drawer balance at $100. When there was more than $100 cash in the drawer, the extra funds would be removed and put into a cash box under the counter. It was the responsibility of the manager on duty to ensure the cash box was locked and kept secure. After Evan left, Mike took the money out of the cash box and put it into his jacket pocket; he planned to tell everyone that in addition to the money in the cash drawer, the thief also demanded the money from the cash box. While Mike was distracted, Susie, a customer, took the opportunity to grab a sample pie from the counter and walk out with it without paying for it.
