It's 7:30 in the morning, you are on your way in to work and your phone rings. There's been an office-involved shooting. Just as the sun was coming up there was a shooting. There are few details but there was an encounter that resulted in a subject being shot. "You need to get here fast." You arrive at the office. Your command staff is there, the prosecutor is there...and there are a few more details rolling in. But the line supervisors and all involved in the shootings and its circumstances are still on the scene. "Chief, the word from the line supervisors is the suspect attacked the officer and multiple officers opened fire. It was a self-initiated contact by the officer so we do not know why Officer James was even out with this suspect. We do not know who the suspect is yet. We do not know anything about weapons or the nature of the attack. But we do know the media has the story...and here is what they have. They're reporting the suspect is clearly on the ground and unarmed. They're reporting there is no way the suspect could have attacked the officer; he's lying on the ground as the officer is shooting him from several feet away." What due process concerns do you see? How would you propose they be addressed, or do you feel they need to be addressed at all? Whose role is it to address each of these concerns if they need to be addressed?
