It's time to define the system requirements, the scope of the project, all within the constraints with which we have been presented and more that we may uncover from our continued analysis. Where to begin? Identify Existing Sources of Information: Are there any starting systems? If so, list them and give a sentence as to what it they do and what they offer to your system. Are there any existing sources of information that your stakeholders use to complete the task today? List them and define what they are. Identify the goal: This end result will be the final output(s). Identify the process(es): So how do you get from the sources of information to the end goal? What are the steps that are taken? The logic? More than likely, there are segments of inputs/process/output that occur throughout the entire, lengthy process of creating the course plan. All of these disparate steps that are needed to get to the end result are the areas that can be designed to be more streamlined. This is the area for improvement, which takes us to the next idea. Visioning and Targeting: How do YOU envision each of these processes working more efficiently? How do you envision them working more efficiently together in the overall system? THIS is what makes up the system requirements! Identify specific information sources and processes that you will change and how. Imagine the user interface and what you might be able to accomplish by providing needed information at their fingertips instead of having them search through web pages. Imagine drop-down selections and clicking items instead of having to enter them. Imagine data checks that could be performed for them, instead of allowing them to enter a mistake (for example, selecting a class who's prerequisite is not yet in the plan).
