Pierce (1948) mechanically measured the frequency (the number of wing vibrations per second) of chirps (pulses of sound) made by a striped ground cricket, at various ground temperatures. Since crickets are ectotherms (cold-blooded organisms), the rate of their physiological processes and their overall metabolism are influenced by the external temperature. Consequently, there is reason to believe that temperature would have a profound effect on aspects of their behavior, such as chirp frequency. Researchers are interested to develop a predictive model to predict the frequency of chirps for a range of ground temperatures. A simple linear regression model where the response variable is chirp frequency (the number of wing vibrations per second) and the predictor variable is ground temperature ( F) was fitted. (6 marks) a. The correlation coefficient (r) was -0.84, based on this information, describe the relationship, its strength and direction.
