Thought example: instead of brainstorming a new and improved hammer, think about what a hammer does? Functions: Hits nails, hits other things, pulls nails, pulls stuff apart. Now, think about alternative solutions to hitting nails, hitting 2x4s, pulling out nails. How else could these individual functions be done?

3. List your problems necessary functions and potential solutions for each individual function with hand-drawn sketches

c. Inputs technique documentation:

1. Look around you (could include TV, room, passenger in car moving, walking)

2. Use what you see as inspiration for a new idea

Thought example: You are developing a cool new flashlight for kids. Look in a childs room and notice Legos. One possible emergent solution: The flashlight could be a Lego figure and the eyes were the light bulbs?

3. List input (trigger) and resultant idea as hand drawn sketches.

d. Props technique documentation:

1. Find something in your space (room, house, etc.) that is unrelated to your problem and solution

2. Use that object as the basis for the new idea

Thought example: You are posed with the challenge developing a new look for food access at the cafeteria and you have a microwave as a prop. One possible emergent solution: What if the food was placed on a large (like 15 feet in diameter) rotary table and slowly turned (as the microwave does) while students picked the food they wanted?

3. List prop and resultant idea as hand drawn sketches.

e. Deck of Cards technique documentation:

1. As an alternative to creating a deck of cards - Use Google images to provide ways of combining different solution aspects. Do an image search for a necessarily element of your solution such as hinges, color schemes, latches, shapes, etc.
