Jewell is a supervisor trainee at the Anytown Restaurant. Shortly after her promotion, Jewell was given the opportunity to attend a state professional association meeting held in her city, with the restaurant paying her registration fee. The association meeting focused on new supervisors and ways they could get off to a good start, not only in dealing with their new job tasks but with their employees as well. Upon her return, Jewell was assigned to make a presentation to the restaurants other supervisors about what she learned at the meeting. During her presentation, Jewell explained one of the themes of the meetingthe importance of an organizations core values concerning its employees, and how those core values, applied consistently and spoken about regularly, can help improve the workplace environment. She also discussed what she learned about the importance of supervisors developing good relationships with their employees, relationships based on mutual respect and trust. At the end of her presentation, Jewell got out a flipchart and said, Heres an exercise that we did at the meeting that I thought you might have fun doing, too. We were asked, What are some simple low- or no-cost ways that supervisors can show their employees that they genuinely value and respect them? Throw out some ideas and Ill write them down.
