Jewellery for Him and Her

In $2014,$ Amaya and her friend Xane started a partnership business specializing in local jewellery. They employed five persons: three jewellery makers, a cashier and a general staff assistant.

During the first two years of operation, the business did extremely well. In $2016,$ the business was invited to take part in an international craft show in Miami. Xane was reluctant, however; Amaya was excited.

$$Hey Xane, this is our big chance to spread our wings on the international scene,$$ said Amaya.

Xane shook his head. $$It is not as easy as that, dear. We would have to employ more people with the requisite skills and experience in jewellery making. In addition, we would have to consider airfare, accommodation, meals and other expenses for the five days we are expected to stay.$$

$$Let us call a meeting with the staff, and get their input before making a decision,$$ replied Amaya.

$$I totally object to such a move,$$ said Xane. $$Our present staff dislikes work, must be coerced, controlled, directed, or threatened with punishment to get them to perform. Their main interest is job security and an increase in salary. They cannot work on their own; it would be a waste of time to ask for their opinions.

$$I do not agree with your views on our employees,$$ replied Amaya. Given the right encouragement, our employees will be happy to participate in the decision$-$making of the firm.$$

$$Well$,$ I will leave you to think about the idea, while I examine our accounting records, as we may need to seek finance.$$ said Amaya.

$$Goodbye Amaya, see you later, I hope we will be able to come to an amicable decision on the matter,$$ replied Xane.
