Jim Austin Zedraeux, Jaz to his friends, has just found what he believes to be the two hottest new prospects in baseball. The first is a high school pitcher, Tommy Andrews, with an arm like a cannon. Tommy is a fast ball pitcher (but doesnt have much else). Jaz figures hell be a great closer with his speed (96 mph average pitch with a standard deviation of 0.8 mph). The second is Chubs Jackson. Chubs, who is anything but, is a hitter, pure and simple. Chubs statistics from his last 4 college seasons are as follows:

1. To be a successful fastball relief pitcher, Tommy has to be able to consistently throw between 94.5 mph and 98 mph (94.5 because anything slower will be launched into the stratosphere, and 98 mph because anything faster and Tommy will probably blow out his arm).

For the remaining problems, test Chubs breakout year using the data from his first 3 seasons (see table g)

2. Jaz thinks Chubs last college season was a break-out year and shows hes ready for professional baseball. The only thing that makes Jaz think twice about Chubs is his error stat.

1. Can you prove at the 90% confidence level that Chubs had a breakout season (in terms of home runs)? Explain. 3.To allay Jazs concerns about Chubs error stat:

a. Can you prove, at the 99% confidence level, that Chubs error stat is not a problem (in terms of Games with Errors)?

1. b. If Jaz is worried about making a mistake (i.e. he signs Chubs and Chubs makes too many errors each season), should he base his decision on the 95% or 99% confidence level test? Why?
