Joan was angry with her neighbor Jim for repeatedly making derogatory comments about her home. One day, Joan saw Jim steal from a neighbor. She immediately called the police and relayed what she had seen, leading to Jim's arrest. Joan was incredibly happy that she was the one who caught Jim. Joan even went so far as to tell Jim how glad she was that he was on trial. 

Despite his guilt, Jim was not found guilty. After his trial, Jim read something about malicious prosecution in the news and decided that since he was not found guilty and he believed Joan wronged him, he should try suing her for malicious prosecution.
