Joanne's Jewels purchased a new truck on January 1, 2019. The following information relates to the purchase: List price of truck $150,000 Purchase discount terms 1/10, n/30 (e.g., 1% discount) State sales tax rate 9% Freight costs $5,000 Cost to install smog device required by a $2,000 government agency Repair due to cosmetic damages to truck $1,000 incurred while getting it ready for use A four-year liability insurance policy (i.e., to cover $4,000 possible damages to the asset) Joanne's Jewels paid in time to take advantage of the purchase discount. Reminder: The sales tax is imposed on the list price of the machine, before any reduction for purchase discounts. The company decided to use the straight line method for depreciation The company determined that the residual value was $20,000, and the truck had a useful life of 8 years. However, after one year (i.e., on January 1, 2020), the company determined that the truck would only last 5 more years and at that time, would have a residual value of $10,000. Part A (8 points) What is the acquisition cost ("purchase price") of the truck? Show each piece of your calculation, and be sure to calculate the total balance. Part B (11 points) Assuming the historical cost or purchase price is $150,000 (i.e., to avoid carry-through errors), do the following: (1) Make the journal entry to record depreciation for 2019 and (2) Calculate the revised amount of depreciation for 2020. Show your calculations (i.e., each piece that is involved in reaching your total number)
