Johan and Marina held a birthday party at their house for their young son, Charlie. Many of Charlie's friends attended the party. Charlie and his best friend, Farid, were playing with matches in Charlie's upstairs bedroom during the party when they accidentally started a fire. Charlie and Farid panicked and ran out of the house without telling anyone about the fire. The fire was discovered shortly afterwards. Farid was severely injured while he was trying to escape from the house by jumping out of the bedroom window. Johan called the fire department while Marina ushered all the children she could find out of the house. The firemen arrived at the scene almost immediately. However, by that time, the fire was raging out of control in the upper half of Johan's house. The leader of the firemen, Ahmad, asked Johan and Marina whether anyone was still in the house. Marina told Ahmad that she thought Charlie and Farid were still trapped upstairs as she had not seen them leave the house. Ahmad ran into the house without bothering to put on any breathing apparatus. As he ran up the stairs, he stepped on a rotten floorboard where his foot got stuck. Johan had known about the rotten floorboard for a couple of months and had put a sign next to the staircase. The sign said, "Avoid using this step" but had taken no measures to repair the rotten floorboard. Ahmad had failed to see the sign due to the amount of smoke in the house. When Ahmad failed to reappear after a few minutes, the other members of the fire department went into the house to investigate and found him on the stairs. He was taken to the hospital due to severe burns and infections in his lungs as a result of inhaling too much smoke. Advise Farid and Ahmad as to whether they could succeed in their actions against Johan and Marina.
