John is from and a national of the Republic of New Land ("New Land"). John worked at an orphanage in New Land and while working there he sought to protect the boys in the orphanage from being from being forcibly recruited into the army. After speaking out against the government's recruitment of child soldiers, he was imprisoned. Conditions in the prison were poor, and he developed a rare disease, which continues to affect his health. He managed to escape and flee the country. After he entered the U.S.A., he did not apply for asylum because he was afraid of being returned to his country. Instead, he decided to live here undocumented. He remains fearful that other New Landers will denounce him, causing him to be returned there. John has a brother in the U.S. who just became a citizen. John later married a U.S. Citizen. They have one son together, now aged 14. Four months ago, John's wife's mental health problems surfaced and she actually tried to attack both John and their son with a knife. He took out a restraining order against her and removed out of the family home with their son, who now lives with him. John has been a very involved father to his son, who suffers from childhood diabetes. However, he has been unable to find work recently due to his immigration status and is worried he will no longer be able to support his son.
